Chynna Phillips says living apart from husband Billy Baldwin is helping their marriage—after he moved into a guesthouse just 50 yards away.

The couple, who married in 1995, offered a candid look at their relationship in an Instagram video while promoting their upcoming YouTube series, “Holding On,” which premieres on Nov. 17.

“Married 30+ years … and we live in separate houses. Here’s why. New series, 'Holding On,' drops Nov 17—watch us find our way back,” Phillips wrote in the caption of one post.

The accompanying footage captures tense exchanges between the spouses as they discuss their communication struggles and decision to live under separate roofs.

“You can’t admit when you’re wrong. That’s just it,” Baldwin tells Phillips in one clip.

“You can't either,” she responds.

Another exchange shows Baldwin reflecting on how their conversations can unravel.

“Here’s the problem. Sometimes the way I communicate causes her to have a nervous breakdown,” he says.

Turning to Phillips, he adds, “And you control and manipulate.”

Elsewhere in the footage, Phillips questions the expectation that married couples must share a home.

“Where in the Bible does it say I have to live under the same roof as my husband?” she asks.

Baldwin also recalls Phillips telling him she wanted to “spend my life” with him—but wanted to “spend it adjacent.”

In another clip, Phillips explains how the arrangement took shape: “He basically said, ‘I’m gonna go live in the guesthouse.’”

Despite the difficult conversations shown in the preview, Phillips says she has found value in documenting their efforts to work through their problems.

“Basically, we’re just working out our issues in real time, and it’s super cathartic and I’m really enjoying it. We’re excited about it,” she says.

In a separate Instagram post, Phillips offered a more pointed assessment of their marriage before Baldwin’s move—and said the short distance between their homes appears to be helping.

“We are so excited to take you on this journey. Literally our marriage was going down like the Titanic, and Billy moved 50 yards away from me in the guesthouse, and so far, so good. It’s kind of working. I’m not really sure what’s going to come of it, but hey, I’m not fighting it,” she said.

The couple, who share three adult children, have previously spoken publicly about living apart.

In 2024, Phillips revealed that she was staying in Santa Barbara while Baldwin was living in Beverly Hills.

At the time, she said they “don't ever want to separate,” but described a “sort of allergy to one another.”

By January 2025, Phillips said they were sharing a home again. Their latest updates reveal another change to that arrangement, with Baldwin now living in the nearby guesthouse as they continue working on their marriage.
